MPAC EXPRESSES CONDOLENCE TO THE FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS OF CRASHED ADC FLIGHT

“Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, Who say, when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return”:- They are those on whom (descend) blessings from Allah, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. [Quran 2:155-157]

Muslim Public Affairs Center (MPAC) wishes to extend its sincere condolence to the families and friends of the passengers who died or were injured in the ill-fated ADC plane crash of Sunday, 29th October 2006.

At a moment like this, words fail in expressing deep felt sympathy for the families and friends– some who lost three generation of the same family and 4 children of the same parents.  But as Muslims Allah gives us the opportunity to quiet our minds and only say: Innalilahi Wa ina Ilahi Rajiun (meaning: To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return). God gives and God takes. We pray for the deceased that God grants their families and friends the faith necessary to accept their bereavement and the survivors the humility to live their gratitude. We also pray for Allah to preserve and promote the survivors in health and the means to continue with their lives after the cruel incident.

That this crash is coming barely a year after the Bellview plane crash and a month to the first anniversary of a Sosoliso plane crash is cruel and a worrisome trend for all air travelers and indeed all Nigerians. We find this a shocking statistics that is utterly unacceptable. This latest crash is another sorrowful reminder on the government and all stakeholders in the aviation industry to put the sector right to stave off these avoidable air mishaps which have become very commonplace in Nigeria unlike other African countries with the same tropical weather conditions.

Though the details of the cause(s) of this tragic incident are still very sketchy, MPAC calls on the government to probe the crash in a comprehensive way in order to enable possible closure for the families and friends of the victims, prevent future recurrence as much as possible and restore sanity in the sector. Appropriate sanction must be put in place for erring airline operators and the various regulatory agencies that are found to be negligent or incompetent.

Once again, we sympathize with the families and friends of all who perished or were injured in the ADC Abuja-Sokoto flight of Sunday, 29th October 2006.

-End-
