It’s 12 days to the blessed month of Ramadan.
Preparing for Ramadan also includes reviving the beautiful Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in what we eat and how we nourish our bodies. Simple foods such as dates, water, and milk were beloved to the Prophet ﷺ and carry both spiritual and physical benefits.
Breaking the fast with dates is a well-known Sunnah that reflects moderation, gratitude, and wisdom. These foods are not only nourishing but also remind us that Ramadan is a month of simplicity, not excess.
Allah says regarding honey:
يَخْرُجُ مِن بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَانُهُ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِّلنَّاسِ
“From their bellies comes a drink of varying colours in which there is healing for people.”
— Surah An-Nahl 16:69
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates, for they are blessed. If he cannot find dates, then with water, for it is pure.”
— Sunan Abu Dawud 2355
Incorporating Sunnah foods into our suhoor and ifṭār is a way of aligning our physical preparation with spiritual intention.
Action for today:
Plan to include dates and other Sunnah foods in your Ramadan meals, beginning with suhoor and ifṭār.
